An investigation is underway after an officer endorsed President Trump using the loudspeaker of a New York City Police Department patrol car.
NBC News reports the incident appears to have taken place on Saturday night with two videos of the moment circulating online. In one video, which features a closer look at the officers, someone is heard cursing and telling the officer to “do it again.”
The officer can then be heard saying, “Trump 2020” over the NYPD patrol car’s loudspeaker.
The other video was posted by a man named Brandon Hines, whose roommate recorded the incident from their apartment window. Over the patrol car’s loudspeaker, the officer can be heard saying, “Trump 2020. Put it on YouTube. Put it on Facebook.”
On Sunday, NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea condemned the endorsement and slammed the officer over his unprofessional behavior.
“One hundred percent unacceptable. Period. Law Enforcement must remain apolitical, it is essential in our role to serve ALL New Yorkers regardless of any political beliefs. It is essential for New Yorkers to trust their Police. Updates to follow after initial investigation,” he wrote in a tweet.
Prior to Shea’s comments, the NYPD News Twitter account stated that an investigation has been launched into the incident.
“We are aware of this video and it is under investigation by our Brooklyn South Investigation Unit. Police officers must remain apolitical,” the tweet read.
Although the department has not announced how the incident will be handled, it appears NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio wants the officer to be punished for violating police policy.
“Let me be clear: ANY NYPD Officer pushing ANY political agenda while on duty will face consequences. We will act fast here, and this will not be tolerated,” he stated in a tweet on Sunday.
