We knew that Gravity Falls would be back some day, but we never expected there to be so many frogs. In an exclusive for Decider, Disney Channel has revealed its upcoming Gravity Falls-inspired episode of Amphibia. And you better believe that frog Grunkle Stan and Frog Soos are just as hilarious as their human counterparts.
Alex Hirsch, the creator and executive producer of Gravity Falls, will star in Amphibia’s “Wax Museum” this Saturday, August 8. In the episode the fearless and pointedly human Anne Boonchuy (Brenda Song) stumbles upon the Oddities Museum, a collection of crazy artifacts and weird exhibits. It’s almost definitely a tourist trap. And who better to own this scam of a museum than the king of scamming himself, Grunkle Stan — er Mr. Ponds?
Quickly, Anne and Mr. Ponds come to an agreement. He’ll give her his Skip-Man antique CD player if she promises to star for one day as his main attraction: a human in a world full of frogs. It’s a cute exchange. But what makes it a must watch for Gravity Falls fans everywhere is what happens afterwards.
As soon as Anne leaves, Mr. Ponds talks to a frog version of another beloved character Hirsch voiced: Soos. “Say Mr. Ponds,” Frog Soos says, channeling countless silly conversations from Hirsch’s two-season masterpiece, “do you ever get the feeling that we exist simultaneously in multiple parallel universes, completely unaware of the other’s very existence?”
“You been licking yourself again, Frog Soos?” Mr. Ponds growls back. From that meta question down to the adorable frog footprint on Mr. Ponds’ fez, it’s a perfect execution. And it couldn’t be coming to a better show.
Amphibia comes from former Gravity Falls director and storyboard artist Matt Braly. The series, which was renewed for a Season 3 back in June, follows one adventure-loving teen as she’s transported to a magical land full of frog-people. As she and her band of new froggy friends try to unlock the secrets of a mysterious music box, their adventures will take them far away from the comfy confines of Wartworld. Season 2 follows their side quest-filled journey as they head to the city of Newtopia.
If you’re still looking for a replacement to fill the Gravity Falls-shaped hole in your heart, Amphibia is a great place to start. Alex Hirsch will guest star in “Wax Museum” on Saturday, August 8 on Disney Channel.
New episodes of Amphibia premiere on Disney Channel and Disney NOW Saturdays at 8:20/7:20c p.m.
