ATX TV…from the Couch got off to a rocky start on Friday morning with the announcement that some of their main panels had been canceled just hours before it was set to begin.
On the festival’s official Twitter page, they announced that panels set for shows including “Scrubs,” “Cougar Town,” “Justified” and “One Day at a Time” as well as their “Channel Changers,” conversation, which featured the presidents of various networks, and “Torchlighters,” which was a conversation with female creators and executives.
Although the festival gave no reason behind the sudden schedule change, they wrote, “We are working closely w/ these panelists to reschedule for a time later this summer.”
Amid the ongoing protests in response to the death of George Floyd while in police custody around the country, the festival announced on Wednesday that they would be going ahead with their programming.
“We know that these are heartbreaking and overwhelming times. We want to let you know that we are moving forward with our virtual festival this weekend (June 5-7) because we believe television is a powerful platform and tool for change,” the wrote in a statement on Twitter.
The statement continued, “Throughout the event we will not shy away from difficult conversations, but lean into them, and amplify the voices that most need to be heard. We will also be raising funds in support of @ColorOfChange, in addition to @DirectRelief and @TheActorsFund.
As we post about the event over these next few days, please know that these issues will remain front of mind for us. We believe that conversations about inclusion, representation, and accountability in the industry are needed more than ever. We look forward to sharing a weekend of honest conversations together, as well as using our platform – and TV – to bring relief and joy however we can. Take care, be well, and we’ll see you From the Couch very soon.”
The updated schedule still includes panels for shows including “Nancy Drew,” “The Bold Type,” “Perry Mason,” “The Leftovers,” and more.
Reps for the festival didn’t return our request for comment.
