Rudy Giuliani and “Good Morning Britain” host Piers Morgan got into a heated and loud exchange on Thursday during an interview about whether President Trump used racist language in remarks about the outbreaks of looting during the George Floyd protests.
The former Big Apple mayor, appearing on the show from New York blamed the “left-wing media” for misinterpreting Trump’s comments on twitter that “when the looting starts, the shooting starts.”
The phrase was associated with Miami Police Chief Walter Headley who used the phrase to warn rioters in 1967. Morgan said Trump’s using the words of a racist was not intended to calm the situation.
“He didn’t quote here. He used that expression probably not knowing where it came from,” Giuliani said and blamed the “left wing progressive Democrat” mayor of Minneapolis for allowing things to spiral out of control.
Morgan tried to press Giuliani but the former mayor continued on.
“I’m up here at 1 o’clock in the morning to answer your questions. I would think you’d give me the courtesy of credit. I know you don’t like my answers, but I think you’d give me the courtesy of giving them,” Giuliani said.
Morgan then said Giuliani was talking “claptrap.”
Moments later, Morgan asked Giuliani why he was giving Trump a pass by saying the president didn’t know where the quote came from.
“Because I’ve known him for 30 years, and I know he’s a fair man who doesn’t have a racist bone in his body,” Giuliani responded.
The two continued to interrupt each other as they squabbled over who was spreading political propaganda and their voices continued to rise.
Giuliani said Trump was just stating the truth, that “if you start looting, people are going to start shooting, they’re going to kill people and they have killed people. And you don’t cover it because you’re a bunch of phonies.”
Morgan shot back: “You’ve lost the plot and it’s sad to see.”
Moments later, Morgan cut off the interview, saying “you sound completely barking mad.”
