White House senior adviser Jared Kushner has been overseeing a major attempt to overhaul the Republican party platform ahead of the 2020 election, according to a report.
The effort is being led by Trump campaign adviser Bill Stepien in tandem with the Republican National Committee, with all involved reporting back to Kushner with any developments, according to Axios.
Work on changes to the platform have been underway for six months.
President Trump’s son-in-law has told confidants that he wants to shrink the GOP’s exhaustive manifesto of party positions down to the size of a single card that could fit in people’s hands, the outlet reported Sunday.
If successful, the move would mark a major shift for Republicans, a party which boasted a 58-page platform in 2016 that was put together over months of painstaking internal negotiations.
Two people familiar with Kushner’s views on the updated platform say he told colleagues that he wanted “something like the 10 principles [Republicans] believe in.”
Kushner also asked Stepien to find historical examples of GOP platforms that looked more like a “mission statement” than what the party had previously used.
The White House senior aide told senior administration officials and campaign staff during a December 2019 meeting that more of their policies should be drawing more people to the Republican party, according to the outlet.
His advice: eliminate alienating language, such as mentions of “gay conversion therapy” or rebranding “School Choice” as “Education Freedom Scholarships” because polling showed the former term did not poll well with African Americans.
Axios reports that a one-page platform has been drafted, but only a few people have seen it.
Officials speaking on condition of anonymity say, however, that the document is far from a final product and that multiple options have been drafted.
No matter what the submitted platform looks like, it will be up to the 112 delegates on the platform committee to decide on platform language in late August. After that, all GOP delegates will vote on the final product.
