Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg will take the stage on Tuesday for his second Democratic debate, five days removed from his first appearance alongside several other candidates campaigning for the political party’s nomination.
Bloomberg will join Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, as well as former South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg and investor Tom Steyer on the debate stage in Charleston, South Carolina. The debate, which begins at 8 p.m. on Tuesday night, is occurring four days before South Carolinians head to the polls for the Palmetto State’s primary.
On Tuesday, Bloomberg’s longtime girlfriend Diana Taylor will be giving her support to the Democratic candidate. The couple began dating in 2000, seven years after Bloomberg and Susan Brown divorced after 20 years of marriage.
Here are some facts about Taylor, who has been a central figure in many of Bloomberg’s appearances on the campaign trail.
Taylor has held several high-profile jobs
After receiving her MBA from Dartmouth and a public health degree from Columbia, Taylor went on to make a name for herself through a number of different jobs. In 1996, Taylor was named deputy secretary to former New York governor George Pataki.
In 2003, she became the New York State superintendent of banks and worked under this role until 2007. Taylor then became the managing director at Wolfensohn Fund Management and vice president of KeySpan Energy and vice chair of Solera Capital, a female-owned private equity firm, according to Business Insider. She now sits on the director boards for Citigroup and Sotheby’s, as well as the Hudson River Park Trust and charitable organizations like Accion and Hot Bread Kitchen.
Taylor is a fashion icon
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Taylor is also known for her style and taste in clothes. While dating Bloomberg, Taylor appeared in the media spotlight more frequently and her choice of style has awarded her a spot on Vanity Fair’s International Best Dressed List on two separate occasions.
During a 2011 interview, Taylor was asked if her look was put together by a personal stylist, to which she replied by saying, “my what? Stylist? You’re talking to her.”
Taylor almost ran for Senate
In 2010, Taylor was urged by New York State Republicans to run for Senate and take the seat held by current New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand. In an interview a year later, Taylor noted that she considered the idea of running for Senate but eventually decided against it.
“The Senate Republicans basically asked me to run and I thought about it, talked to a lot of people,” Taylor said in a 2011 interview. “But then when I really thought about it, what attracted me to the idea was the race because I knew I could win that race. It was the thought of actually having to go and do that job, that was really not all that appealing.”
Taylor has been actively helping Bloomberg’s campaign
While Taylor personally believes that Bloomberg will make a good president if elected, she is also trying to inform the rest of the country of her beliefs.
“I’m really looking forward to the debate tonight because everybody will see Michael [Bloomberg] as he really is,” Taylor said prior to the last Democratic debate. “And look out November, because he’s going to be the President of the United States.”
Taylor has also collaborated with Arizona State University President Michael Crow on plans to improve the education system if Bloomberg is elected.
Taylor has adopted some unusual titles for herself
While Taylor and Bloomberg are not married, Taylor recently spoke about their relationship and regarded herself as a “unicorn” instead of a girlfriend.
“Nobody’s come up with the language around what we are,” Taylor said during an interview with The Washington Post. “I’m a unicorn in a unicorn campaign.”
Taylor also has created a creative nickname to refer to her relationship with Bloomberg’s two daughters, Georgina, 37, and Emma, 40, referring to herself as their “step-friend.”
“A sort of step-whatever for Mike’s children – friend, I guess,” Taylor told the Post.
