Levi’s has unveiled a collaboration with Tremaine Emory‘s Denim Tears label, with the designer and creative reworking pieces from the brand’s Authorized Vintage program. The starting point for the collection is the story of cotton in America, with Tremaine exploring how the material is intertwined with the legacy of slavery.
The stand-out items in the collection are the denim pieces — a Trucker Jacket, 501 Jean and Plantation Hat — all of which feature a print of cotton wreaths. This motif was discovered by Tremaine on Kara Walker‘s Instagram, and has been used by the designer to create “a logo” from the legacy of slavery in America. These denim pieces are set to release first in indigo, before black denim options arrive at a later date. Rounding out the collection is a range of digitally-printed graphic T-shirts. The tees mix black-and-white images of cotton fields with the red Levi’s patch.
The collection is set to release at pop-up stores across the world, beginning in Los Angeles on January 25, before arriving in New York (February 1), Atlanta (February 2) and London (February 8). The capsule will then arrive on the Denim Tears web store on February 9.
To accompany the launch of the collection, Tremaine has created a short film shot by his father in his family’s hometown of Harlem, Georgia. The video features Tremaine’s grandmothers discussing their experiences as African Americans. You can watch a clip from the film below.
