Nancy Pelosi said during a televised Town Hall on Thursday night that former President Bill Clinton was impeached for “being stupid’ when he lied about having an affair with Monica Lewinsky.
The House speaker, asked why she supported impeachment proceedings now when she didn’t back Bubba’s ouster, said the situations were like apples and oranges.
“Some of these same people are saying, oh, this doesn’t rise to impeachment. Right there, impeaching Bill Clinton for being stupid in terms of something like that,” the California Democrat said at the gathering in DC, which was televised by CNN.
“ I mean, I love him, I think he was a great president, but being stupid in terms of that, what would somebody do, not to embarrass their family, but in any event, so they did Bill Clinton,” she continued, adding that she was also under pressure from fellow Dems to impeach ex-president George W. Bush.
“They [wanted] me to do George Bush, I didn’t want [impeachment] to be a way of life in our country,” she said.
Pelosi said Thursday the House would proceed with “articles of impeachment” against Trump, saying he left Congress no choice after he asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a July 25 phone call to launch probes that would benefit him politically ahead of the 2020 election.
“Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our Founders and a heart full of love for America, today I am asking our chairman to proceed with articles of impeachment,” she said, referring to Manhattan Rep. Jerry Nadler, the leader of the House Judiciary Committee.
“The president’s actions have seriously violated the Constitution,” she continued. “Our democracy is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt once again the election for his own benefit.”
Pelosi also clashed with reporter James Rosen from the pro-Trump Sinclair Broadcasting Group who asked her during her weekly press conference if she hated the president.
“I don’t hate anybody. We don’t hate anybody. Not anybody in the world. Don’t accuse me,” she said, leaving the podium to approach Rosen and pointing at him as she spoke.
“This is about the Constitution of the United States and the facts that lead to the president’s violation of his oath of office. And as a Catholic, I resent your using the word hate in a sentence that addresses me,” she said, adding that she prays for Trump.
The president wasted no time lashing out at the speaker, whom he mocks as “Nervous Nancy,” on Twitter, saying he didn’t believe that she prayed for him.
“Nancy Pelosi just had a nervous fit. She hates that we will soon have 182 great new judges and sooo much more. Stock Market and employment records. She says she ‘prays for the President.’ I don’t believe her, not even close,” he wrote.
The president denies wrongdoing, and has repeatedly called the proceedings a ‘hoax,” a “with hunt” and, at this week’s NATO meeting, “a joke.”
