It’s not at all surprising that anything Rihanna touches turns to gold: months after launching her fashion line Fenty, she’s snagged her first big award. At the British Fashion Awards in London Monday night, the 31-year-old was presented with the Urban Luxe award for her contributions to sportswear by another icon, Janet Jackson.
“You’re loved for your style, you’re respected as an artist, entrepreneur, and for the first black woman to start a brand with LVMH,” said Jackson.”
According to Vogue, the prize was created by the British Fashion Council to honor contemporary labels that elevate the concept of casual. The same award went to Off-White’s Virgil Abloh last year. Rihanna—always repping her own creations—wore a mint-green Fenty minidress (with a bedazzled back), a sheer jacket and gloves, and satin heels in the same shade. Rihanna was previously nominated for her Fenty x Puma collaboration in 2017.
During the last few years, the musician has proven herself a force to be reckoned with in the fashion and beauty world, setting new standards with everything she creates, like introducing 40 inclusive shades of foundation in her Fenty Beauty collection. Beauty brands offering extended, diverse colors to suit women across a large spectrum of skin tones feels obvious now, but just two years ago it was groundbreaking. She also did it with her debut fashion show for her Savage X lingerie, featuring an inclusive cast of models that felt like an antidote to the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show’s parade of tall, thin, mostly white, women (and she’s since been credited with helping kill the VS spectacle, which was officially canceled earlier this month.) And with her luxury fashion house, Fenty, she’s the first black woman to lead a brand under the LVMH umbrella. (LVMH, the fashion conglomerate that owns Louis Vuitton and Dior, is Fenty’s parent company.)
Rihanna is both CEO and artistic director of Fenty, whose prices run higher than her past fashion collaborations but sit at the lower end of the luxury bracket: T-shirts start at around $200 and outerwear goes up to $1,500. More important, Fenty is built on and follows many of the same principles that have defined Rihanna’s various retail ventures, with representation at its core.
