“While Ambassador Sondland’s phone was not on speakerphone, I could hear the President’s voice through the earpiece of the phone,” Holmes said of a phone call that allegedly took place a day after the call between Trump and Zelenskiy, according to the transcript of his closed-door deposition. “The President’s voice was very loud and recognizable, and Ambassador Sondland held the phone away from his ear for a period of time, presumably because of the loud volume.”
During the call, Holmes claimed that Trump had asked whether Ukraine would be carrying out an investigation, and that Sondland responded Ukraine would do anything Trump asked, after telling the president that Ukraine “loves your ass.”
Holmes said that the dinner had taken place on an outdoor terrace and explained that he was able to hear the call, placed by Sondland from Kyiv, because of the loud volume of the call—despite it not being on speakerphone.
“I then heard President Trump ask, quote, ‘So he’s going to do the investigation?’ unquote. Ambassador Sondland replied that ‘He’s going to do it, ‘ adding that President Zelenskiy wiIl, quote, ‘Do anything you ask him to.’ Even though I did not take notes of these statements, I had a clean recollection that these statements were made. I believe that my colleagues who were sitting at the table also knew that Ambassador Sondland was speaking with the President,” Holmes said in his testimony.
