Josh Gordon met with reporters in Seattle for the first time on Saturday. Asked about his recent departure from the Patriots, the wide receiver said he was surprised to be waived by the team. He claimed it was an unexpected turn of events.
“(W)e all know it’s a business,” Gordon said. “Your time can be short-lived anywhere. You never know what could happen day to day in the NFL. But that was the decision they made and I’m glad to be here now.”
Gordon was initially put on injured reserve by the Patriots on October 23 with “a minor injury designation.” Eight days later, he was released and went through the waiver process. The Seahawks were the only team to claim him.
After trading for Mohamed Sanu, and needing to make a decision on N’Keal Harry, and whether or not to activate the rookie off injured, the Patriots decided to part with Gordon.
The 28-year-old receiver didn’t seem too disappointed at his landing spot, or being able to play with Russell Wilson. He said he had been wanting to play in Seattle for some time.
“Actually, yes for a long time,” he said. “Me and Russ have been talking about it for a long time, for a while behind the scenes, how nice it would be. . . . here I am.”
Gordon indicated his relationship with the Seahawks quarterback went back maybe four or five years.
“I admire his game,” Gordon said of Wilson. “I think maybe he respected mine mutually. I love the way he plays, it’s as simple as that. He’s a great ball player, he can make it happen from pretty much anywhere.”
Gordon said thus far the transition has gone well.
“A great environment, a great football team, and organization,” he said. “I’m really happy to be here.”
The Seahawks play the unbeaten 49ers Monday night. Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll hasn’t said whether or not he planned on playing Gordon. But just like when Gordon first came to New England last year, Carroll told reporters he’s picked up the playbook very quickly.
“He was very impressive in terms of picking stuff up, studying overtime,’’ Carroll said. “He fit in really well. He’s a really good athlete. You can really tell that he’s got a lot of potential to be a big-time player. It was fun seeing him on the practice field.’’
