Trump garnered loud applause, cheering and “USA” chants from supporters at Bryant-Denny Stadium as he appeared in his box suite on Saturday during the college football match in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. First Lady Melania Trump accompanied the president in flying to the state on Air Force One that afternoon and sat with him in the box suite.
After Trump was seen at the game, USA Today reported that the Alabama team’s quarterback, Tua Tagovailoa, was seen fumbling in the red zone. At halftime, Alabama were down 20 points. The loss ended the team’s 31-game home winning streak.
Some videos, uploaded to Twitter, showed anti-Trump fans attempting to loudly boo him, though they were largely drowned out by the resounding cheers. As the president’s motorcade pulled up to the stadium before kickoff earlier in the day, bystanders and attendees surrounded him and cheered as he arrived. One fan wielding a megaphone could even be heard comparing the president to Jesus Christ.
The warm reception comes after Trump recently attended two widely-covered athletic events, the World Series and UFC 244, during which he was overwhelmingly booed by attendees in the crowd. Though not all Alabamians were pleased about the president’s visit. Several protests erupted across Tuscaloosa ahead of the game, with demonstrators holding up signs and flying the so-called “Baby Trump” balloon.
As Trump was receiving cheers, one of his supporters slashed the giant inflatable balloon at a protest that was being held at a nearby park. The orange balloon, which features a cartoon depiction of the president wearing diapers and holding a smartphone for texting, immediately began deflating rapidly, before falling from the sky. The suspect was then arrested by authorities.
Trump revealed his attendance at the game earlier this week during a rally in Monroe, Louisiana, where he told supporters he will see the “LSU versus a pretty good team for Alabama.” “I’m a football fan and I hear you have a great quarterback,” Trump added. “We’re going to see. I’m actually going to the game. I said that’s the game I want to go to. It will be tremendous. Two great teams.”
