If you are a human being with a Twitter account, there’s a high chance you might have come across some tweets about Keanu Reeves’ rumored girlfriend’s age. That is to say that people are truly freaking out and dubbing Reeves as some sort of feminist hero for finding himself what Twitter has decided to call an “age-appropriate” girlfriend in artist Alexandra Grant. (Elite Daily has reached out to reps for both Reeves and Grant for confirmation on their relationship status, but has not heard back in time for publication).
The way our society has reacted to their red carpet appearance is majorly problematic for many reasons but the first is that Grant has been reduced to nothing more than Reeves’ “age-appropriate girlfriend.”
Grant is a successful person in her own right. She’s a Los Angeles based artist whose work mixes the pleasures of both literary and visual art. Her most recent exhibition “Born to Love” explores Sophocles’ play Antigone and has been praised by multiple publications in her local art scene, from LA Weekly to California Home & Design. So, yeah, I think it’s safe to say she’s a lot more than “Keanu Reeves’ age-appropriate girlfriend.”
Oh, and did I mention she’s nine years younger than him? Let me be clear here: There is absolutely nothing wrong with Reeves dating someone nine years his junior. It’s our misogynistic society that’s the issue here; not Reeves.
I mean, look at the absolute cyber party people decided to throw for the man because of his “age-appropriate girlfriend” who is actually almost a decade younger than him:
People are losing their minds with excitement as if he just found a cure to ovarian cancer. Also, can we talk about the person who praised him for dating “an age appropriate girlfriend while all these other celebrities prey on women 10-20 years younger than them”? Dude, she’s nine years younger than him. It’s no big deal and it still wouldn’t be a big deal, even if she was 20 years younger than him, but he’s not doing anything heroic here. He’s just dating someone he likes.
The ideology that has everyone so jazzed about Reeves dating a woman around his own age is sex to both women and men. Our society’s impulse to feverishly praise the actor for dating someone “age appropriate” just goes to show how low our bar is for men. Conversely, the fact that the “age appropriate” woman in question is actually nine years his junior highlights the double standard we have for men and women.
I mean, imagine if Jennifer Aniston was dating someone almost a decade younger than her. Would we all be high fiving her for dating someone “age appropriate” or would she be dubbed a “cougar”?
Luckily, there are some people on Twitter who decided to shed light on how whack our treatment of both Reeves and Grant has been:
Again, this isn’t meant to insult neither Reeves nor Grant. This is just meant to highlight the rude way in which our society has chosen to treat both of them.
