Nike has fused the key design details and colors of the Air Huarache and Air Max 1 together to create a bold “87 x 91” DNA Series pack. Two of the legendary Tinker Hatfield‘s most important and influential silhouettes, both the Huarache and Air Max 1 shifted the landscape of athletic footwear when they originally released — the Air Max 1 in 1987 and the Huarache in 1991, hence the pack’s “87 x 91” moniker. Now, they’ve been brought together in a bold new style, each taking on the other’s signature elements for a dual-pronged homage that shows the power of classic Nike Sportswear designs.
An instantly noticeable swap arrives via the color palettes: the AM1 takes on the Huarache’s signature “Scream Green” mix of white, volt and royal, while the Huarache adopts the AM1’s “Varsity Red” combo of red, soft tan and white. Even the insole stylings are switched. However, both designs are much more than simple color flips brought together for a pack.
The Air Max 1 also borrows the Huarache’s multi-eyelet throat styling for extra texture. The tongue gets a neoprene makeover, while the heel clip is constructed from plastic, nodding to the support system that holds together the Huarache’s sock-like upper. Meanwhile, the Huarache discards its signature rubberized circular tongue badge for the AM1’s square fabric iteration, and also adds an original AM1-shaped suede mudguard.
Special accessories and unique packaging aplenty are present here as well. Both shoes are housed in a dual-layered box with colorful detailing, and are accompanied by two pairs of matching socks plus a design booklet that showcases original ads and tech specs for each shoe. The pack’s name indicates that this might not be the final fusion we see either — as it’s dubbed “DNA Series,” there may be other history-filled two packs arriving in the future as well.
The Nike “DNA 87 x 91” pack will release at Nike Japan on November 5, with a potential global release to follow later this season. Retail is set at ¥33,000 JPY (approx. $303 USD).
