Hermione Lodge (Marisol Nichols) might be in jail at the beginning of Riverdale Season 4, but that won’t mean she doesn’t have time for romance. And in fact, as revealed at the show’s New York Comic Con panel, she’ll be getting loving from a familiar source: her ex-husband, Hiram Lodge (Mark Consuelos).
“I didn’t know about Hiram … until I got the script, and then I was like, oh my god, really? Seriously,” Nichols told Decider after the panel.
When Hermione was first introduced on Riverdale, Hiram was in jail for money laundering (and not yet cast), and she was moving back to her home town with her daughter Veronica (Camila Mendes) to try and save some cash — and avoid the stain to their reputation. Hiram was released in Season 2, and since then the two have had a careful détente Nichols noted was more of a business relationship, than a romantic one. And the whole time, both of the Lodge parents have been working their own schemes in the background, often to the other’s detriment.
In fact, Hiram is the reason Hermione is in jail, setting her up by revealing the multiple murders she committed, even while he’s also in jail (again); albeit a private prison he owns. Though they’re in separate places, the duo will be reunited by episode five of the new season, “Chapter Sixty-Two: Witness for the Prosecution,” which finds both of them on trial for their lives.
“I don’t know if it’s romantic?” Nichols continued, on the relationship. “I mean, they tried to kill each other. I think it’s more of that toxic addiction, sexual, intellectually stimulating thing that they have with each other … Why would they still be with each other? They tried to kill each other. They hate each other. Oh, okay, maybe the sex is good. So we kind of touched on that, in a really great scene. It’s gonna be fun.”
The scene in question finds Hermione and Hiram kissing — and slapping — as they hook up. Further pics from behind the scenes seem to tease that the duo is still together as the season progresses; but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a chance for another romantic prospect in the future. A section of the Riverdale fanbase would very much like Hermione to leave Hiram for good, and get together with intrepid news reporter Alice Cooper (Mädchen Amick). The ‘ship name, by the way, is Hermionice. FYI.
But will it happen?
“I think maybe, season… Five? Season six?” Nichols said, laughing. “Anything, when we run out of things, that’ll be in there. But honestly, I haven’t had [many] scenes with Mädchen, and we’ve always wanted Alice and Hermione scenes together. Even as friendship. So hopefully if we do address that, it will start out as a friendship, and then we’ll see… Something else. And I wouldn’t put it past them.”
Riverdale returns to The CW on Wednesday, October 9 at 8/7c.
