At New York Comic Con today, The CW’s Riverdale held a highly anticipated panel previewing Season 4 featuring members of the cast and show creator Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. About halfway through, Aguirre-Sacasa said that the production was considering doing a Twin Peaks inspired episode, to which actress Mädchen Amick immediately shot back, “can I direct that one?” It was a fun exchange, but as it turns out not out of nowhere, as Amick will be directing an episode during Riverdale Season 4.
“I am going to be,” Amick told Decider when asked about the exchange after the panel. “I’m on the slate to direct episode 19 right now. That’s why I was like, when he was talking about the Twin Peaks episode, I was like, oh, let that be my episode! So maybe he’ll make that be 19, I don’t know.”
To give this all a little context, Amick has been acting since 1989, but really came to fame playing Shelly Johnson on David Lynch’s Twin Peaks. The bizarre mystery series was a cult hit, and Amick later reunited with the cast for the movie, Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, as well as Twin Peaks: The Return, a sequel TV series that several people insisted on calling a movie despite all evidence to the contrary. It was a whole thing.
Though Amick is best known for acting, including her role as matriarch/crack news reporter Alice Cooper on Riverdale, behind the scenes she’s slowly been working on her directing chops. She’s directed two video shorts, and recently shadowed directors on both the sets of Riverdale, and fellow Archie-verse show Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
The other part of this is that Riverdale is heavily influenced by Twin Peaks — which is probably a large part of why Amick was cast in the first place, as well as her prodigious acting talent. Also set in a small town replete with strangeness and murder, Riverdale never goes full on Lynch, which is why Aguirre-Sacasa noted that they’re considering doing a full-on tribute to the visionary genius at some point later on.
Will Amick’s network directorial debut turn out to be a David Lynch inspired episode of Riverdale? When Amick suggested it on the panel, a thrilled looking Aguirre-Sacasa initially said, “Yas!” followed by a hasty, “we’ll see,” probably realizing he can’t promise that sort of thing live in front of an audience of thousands without checking a few boxes first.
As for what else to look forward to with Amick in Season 4? After settling The Farm storyline — a cult that her character is working to take down from the inside — in episode three, she’ll be moving back home. Only this time, she’ll be living not just with her daughter Betty Cooper (Lili Reinhart), but also FP Jones (Skeet Ulrich), the love of her life, and his kids Jellybean (Trinity Likins) and Jughead (Cole Sprouse), who is dating Betty.
“We get to a see a happy Alice for a bit, and a content Alice,” Amick told us. “We definitely have some good FP/Alice scenes. Falice is definitely rising! So we get to see some more content, grounded Alice. But, you know, she’s still feisty. Don’t put anything by her, she’ll take you down.”
Riverdale returns Wednesday, October 9 at 9/8c on The CW
