Last week, the Big Little Lies season finale left fans with one question: will there be a Big Little Lies Season 3? HBO programming chief Casey Bloys seemed to dismiss the idea last week, but now, stars and executive producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are leaving the door open for a third season. In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Kidman and Witherspoon revealed that they “will decide as a group” whether or not to pursue another season, as “this show is bigger than any single one of” them. Added Witherspoon, “If there are conversations still to be had, I think that’s really what determines if we can tell a Season 3.”
When asked about the Season 2 cliffhanger — in which the five women head into the police department to, presumably, turn themselves in for Perry’s death — Kidman and Witherspoon were coy. “It’s so important not to discuss all of the intricacies of this, because if we do a Season 3, there’s going to be things that will be explained,” said Kidman. “It’s probably better to allow just a little mystery. I know the voracious appetite for knowledge and to leave no stone unturned. But I’m always going to fight for just a little bit… there can be a few mysteries and secrets held intact.”
Witherspoon agreed, telling Entertainment Weekly that they would only do another season if the story allows for it. “If there are conversations still to be had, I think that’s really what determines if we can tell a Season 3,” said Witherspoon. “Is it as good as Season 1 and 2? Does the audience still have questions? Do we have answers?”
But despite their concerns about keeping the mystery alive, it is entirely possible that Big Little Lies Season 3 could happen. “It’s a collaboration. We work as a group. We are incredibly tight; we talk to each other, and we are on each other’s side,” said Kidman of a potential third season. “So, we will decide as a group. We listen to the way in which people react because so much of TV is a very immediate medium. Every single person who has made this has said this show is bigger than any single one of us.” Laura Dern, Zoe Kravitz, and Shailene Woodley, where you at?
