An incredible and shocking scene unfolded in Zhongshan, China on Saturday, as beloved Hong Kong actor Simon Yam was attacked, stabbed and repeatedly slashed onstage during a public presentation for the Beijing Easyhome building materials company. Yam—best known to American audiences for his role in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life—is currently recovering from the incident.
Per Variety, an unidentified man rushed the stage during the Beijing Easyhome presentation, stabbing Yam in the stomach and slashing his arm before security managed to intervene. Videos of the event have been circulating on social media, while Yam’s manager, Lester Mo Gee-man of Emperor Entertainment, offered, “The knife wound to his abdominal area caused minor damage to his internal organs which has been repaired. The injuries to his right hand have also been treated. He is resting and in a stable condition.”
Subsequent footage sees Yam upright, alert and holding his wound.
Yam, 64, maintains a revered and prolific career in the Asian film industry, with credits including Election, Exiled and Korean thriller The Thieves. As of yet, Zhongshan police have neither identified Yam’s attacker, who remains in custody, nor commented on any potential motive for the attack.
