Taraji P. Henson has had to back out of attending the starry Met Gala on Monday to attend a more somber affair — the funeral of “Boyz n the Hood” director John Singleton, Page Six has exclusively learned.
Henson was meant to attend the Met Gala with designer Vera Wang. This year’s theme for Anna Wintour’s Super Bowl of fashion is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” and we hear that Wang’s look for the “Empire” star was spectacular. “They had an epic look planned,” said a source.
But Henson had to sadly cancel her appearance at the 11th hour. “She had Vera’s full support and blessing,” said an insider.
Henson collaborated frequently with Singleton: She starred in his films “Four Brothers” and “Baby Boy.” He’d also directed an episode her hit show “Empire” and produced her 2005 Sundance breakout movie “Hustle & Flow.”
Henson has worn Wang’s creations on a string of high-profile red carpets recently, including this year’s Golden Globes. She also donned a dramatic custom creation by the designer at last year’s Oscars. She told “Entertainment Tonight” of Wang’s eye-popping Oscars frock with a daringly high slit, “I’m not afraid … Vera was like, ‘Let’s take it there!’”
We hear that Wang will instead be paired on the carpet with a different Met Gala guest. Attendees will reportedly include Lady Gaga, Serena Williams, Blake Lively, Lupita Nyong’o and Jennifer Lopez.
The service for Singleton is reportedly an intimate gathering for friends and family before a larger, more public celebration of the director’s life, according to reports. Henson visited Singleton in the hospital with co-star Tyrese Gibson after the celebrated director suffered a stroke. After he died, a mourning Henson reportedly said she “could not stop crying.” She also posted online: “If it were NOT for #JohnSingleton I would not have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame He put me in my first feature film #BabyBoy.”
We hear there’s still a chance Henson’s Met Gala dress will be seen at some point. A fashion watcher said it could still turn up on a future red carpet.
