“She was a fan of mine!” Scott, 43, told Page Six Style. “She came up to me at a fan event before her first album came out and told me she loved my work and that she hoped to wear my clothes one day.”
Over the past decade since that fateful meeting, Scott has created wildly whimsical looks for Perry, 34, to wear for countless performances and press appearances alike, even whipping up four different outfits for her 2015 Super Bowl halftime show.
“Katy so genuinely speaks my language, not only on a visual and creative level, but on a human level,” he explained. “She really is someone I admire as a friend, as an artist, as a performer and as a human. I’ve been so thrilled to be a part of her journey.”
Their next stop? Tonight’s Met Gala, which will mark Perry and Scott’s second time attending together.
“When this exhibition [“Camp: Notes on Fashion”] was announced, she was like, ‘Oh my God, can you believe it? It’s all about you!’” the designer recalled with a laugh. “And frankly, there probably isn’t a performer in pop history that’s used camp and humor more than she has. I have guesses at what people expect from us, but I’m trying to outdo those expectations. It’s going to be an eleganza extravaganza.“
Below, Scott takes a look back at a few of his all-time favorite collaborations with Perry:
